Anything But That

הלל.jpg Today, the world has faced the worst nightmare of any parent, whoever and wherever they are. You don’t even need to be a parent to feel the horror. It is impossible to remain indifferent at the sight of murder in a kid’s bedroom – with pink sheets.

Everybody Likes a Compliment

Let’s talk about compliments for a minute. It might sound like an insignificant topic, but I think it’s actually a pretty underrated one. I’ll say it straight out – there were compliments that helped me progress in life. A sentence here, a word there, that remained etched in my mind and contributed to shaping my character. Examples? With pleasure. When I was in sixth grade, I took a Bible test. I remember that it was difficult...

Too Normal for a Settler

I’ve recently reached a difficult and sad conclusion. I think that it’s the reason why I am having trouble functioning as the spokesperson of the Binyamin region and that makes me a less relevant subject for journalists to interview. I’m too normal, too regular, too boring. Problem number 1: I don’t live on a hilltop. True, I’ve lived in a caravan for two years, but it’s a caravan that unfortunately is located in a town, and an authorized, legal town at that...

To Be a Military Wife

This year, on Israel’s Memorial Day for fallen soldiers, things were different. Suddenly it hit me. Suddenly it was closer to home. The man who has been by my side for 14 years went back to the army and enlisted as a career soldier about six months ago. Suddenly, my family and I found ourselves spending time on army bases, eating Shabbat meals with soldiers and officers and their families. We’re getting to know other families who also come to the bases for Shabbat to be with their loved one...

A Masters in Motherhood

I earned my Masters in motherhood. Why don’t I have a “real” degree? During the years when everyone was in college, I chose to do other things. I studied Judaism, which of course changed my life, and to this day I am thankful for the choice I made. Afterward, I began to study Ceramic Design at Bezalel Academy of Arts, but in the middle of the first semester, I got married. The night I started dreaming about the projects I had to submit, I realized that Bezalel was getting on my nerves...

A Light Extinguished Too Soon

dafna meir.jpg Dafna Meir, a nurse at Soroka Hospital, resident of Otniel and mother of six, was brutally stabbed and murdered yesterday at the doorstep of her home. Dafna was a unique woman, dedicated to her children and the patients she treated. Dafna wrote a special prayer that accompanied her daily as she worked with her patients. May her memory be blessed.

I’m On My Way, I Don’t Know Where I’m Going…

טרמפים.jpg It’s almost midnight and I’m returning from a long business meeting in Tel Aviv. I reached the city by train to avoid the morning rush hour traffic, leaving my car at Yarkon Junction. Just before getting on Highway 5 and rushing home, I stop to pick up hitchhikers at the bus stop. There are two people standing there. She doesn’t get in, but he does, heading toward Ariel. Excellent...

Mountain Woman

Mountain women 1.jpg I’m Moriya. Like everyone, I am a lot of things simultaneously. I am a daughter, sister and granddaughter. I am the mother of three gorgeous, happy children and a wife. I am a Jew and a religious person. I am a feminist, I’m right wing and I’m still deliberating whether I am an especially liberal conservative or vice versa. And I’m also a settler. Some of my definitions were born along with me, while others I accumulated over the years...

Time to Grow Wings

Nיכל פרץ 3.jpg To try to have your cake and eat it too. To be a good, giving, warm, loving, caressing, embracing mother. To try to realize my potential and listen to the creativity I feel shouting inside of me – put the pedal to the metal! Express yourself, fulfill the dream, develop, don’t be afraid. To try to find the balance, to try not to beat myself up about the imperfect things, to drive out the guilty conscience...

The Show Must Go On?

נבי צלאח.jpg Shows are nice. Definitely those deep, emotional shows that tug at your heartstrings and stimulate you to think. I go out to shows occasionally, for the experience and for all of the reasons I just mentioned. But there’s one thing I’ll never do – I’ll never sit in the front row. Usually because of the price, I admit it (why pay four times more when it’s the same as sitting in the last row with binoculars?). Yet, even if there’s no difference in price, I don’t like sitting there...
